Prologue

After exploring Lassen Volcanic National Park, I aimed for Reno, Nevada, to pick up my sister before heading to Mammoth Lakes to meet her husband, who had gone ahead for some fly fishing. Along the way, I discovered a hike intersecting the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) called Spanish Peak. This early morning hike led to an amazing overlook. After enjoying a peaceful morning with a few PCT hikers passing by, I headed to Quincy, CA, to stock up on supplies.

Strangers, Friends, Family

In the parking lot, a couple approached me, curious about my van. They soon invited me over to their place to learn more about the van and my journey. It quickly became clear that our world views were quite different! Then, nearly a week later, I was back on the road, reflecting on just what I had experienced.

Common Ground

The road can be full of surprises. Strangers often show incredible kindness, even in a divided world. Connecting with others, especially those with different perspectives, can be life-changing.

Maybe this is what my Finding America Project is all about. Could simply listening and seeking to understand others bring us closer together? Can supporting one person at a time be both the least and most we can do? I was beginning to think so.

It’s hard to capture the essence of my time with the couple who invited me to their home. A week of laughing, listening, sharing, hiking, eating (amazing food!), and a memorable July 4th river float left a profound impact on me.

I am deeply grateful for people who prioritize love and friendship. Such encounters don’t happen often enough, but when they do, they are truly special. This wasn’t my first experience of such kindness, and I cherish the many people who have shown me generosity along the way.

To all those who have shared their kindness and openness with me, thank you. I believe I’ve experienced what it means to find common ground. What does common ground mean to you?

Long Lake and Mount Elwell Loop Trail

Length:6.0 mi (We think more like 8.0) Elevation gain: 1,912 ft Route type: Loop

This hike surprised me with the variety, views, etc.! Beautiful. The company wasn’t too bad either!

Sierra Buttes Lookout via Sierra Buttes OHV and Sierra Buttes Trail

Length: 9.2 mi Elevation gain: 3,339 ft Route type: Out & back

Wendy and I hiked the last mile after driving up the OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) trail. It was a perfect finish to a full day. We met Kenny, who drove to the end at the summit! After taking in the views we loaded up for a wild ride back down!
